Reagan supported temporary work-permit program

Watching this 2.5-minute video from the Bush-41 v. Reagan debate about the issue of illegal immigration couldn’t be more relevant today, given the Lincoln Club’s recent plan for reform.

VIDEO: Bush/Reagan on Illegal Immigration

Of course conservatives disagree with Reagan’s eventual decision in 1986 to grant amnesty to illegal immigrant, but years earlier it seems he supported a guest-worker permit program as a way to start dealing with the problem.

His quote at the end is this:

“Rather than talking about a fence, why don’t we work out some recognition of our mutual problems, make it possible for them to come here legally with a work permit, and then while they’re working an earning here, they pay taxes here. And when they want to go back, they can go back and they can cross and open the border both ways.”

  1. Reagan also never once submitted a balanced budget to congress. Not a guy I’d be turning to for a lot of answers.

  2. Renaldo de Vere says:

Just want to let you know there are many Latinos out here who voted for Obama in 2008 who have become very unhappy and disillusioned with constantly being lied to and betrayed by his administration.

Even though we may not totally agree with the GOP candidates position we would rather deal with someone who is a straight shooter, who will tell us exactly where they are coming from.
Like they say “honesty is the best policy” unlike what Obama has offered us.

Please pass this message on to the GOP candidates:

Many Latinos are ready to vote GOP this time around …don’t put us down, don’t attack us….give us a reason to vote for you and you may very well be in for a very pleasant surprise next November!!

    Muchas Gracias ,
